Ralph Curtis, owner of BigTop Lighting, started his lighting career in 1982 working in some of the most famous nightclubs in New York City.
Over the next 10 years, while still working in nightclubs, he developed his skills in the field of production lighting, working for some of the biggest production houses in New York; Corporate Parties and Fashion Shows in down town Manhattan.
In the early and mid 90's he ventured into a new discipline of lighting design, and learned the basics of stage production by working for Club Med. and various Cruise Lines such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival. It was here he got his first taste of working with performing artists and live orchestras.
In the mid 90's he jumped back into production lighting in Boston Massachusetts and started working for a few production houses around the city. It was here he got his start in doing television and film lighting freelancing for numerous shows; MSNBC, ESPN, A&E and a host of local channels in the Boston area.
It was also in the 90's that he began his journey into the art of Production Tent Lighting. Tent Parties, Gala's, Corporate Events and Weddings. These events also included fundraisers at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, and multi tent set-ups for large-scale concert festivals.
Upon moving to Montreal in 2002, he found that the tent event scene was alive and well, but none of the production companies catered specifically to this genre. So in 2005 BigTop Lighting was born to service this ever-growing community.
